Arianrhod laid there.  On the medical bed, her arms restrained, the night could not bring sleep to her.  The stress of being a captive once again dominated her thoughts.  Her thoughts raced through her mind as if they were reality and not just her own perception of what was happening to her. Questions like ‘how was here son doing?’, ‘how did they find me’, ‘is my son alive’, ‘how can I escape them once and for all’.

“Don’t worry sweetie, it’s for the best.  We will find the best warriors for our Country.  Wouldn’t it be grand to be the prototype for a new age of military personnel?  After all of this is done we will make sure you are well taken care of,” said a very familiar female voice.

Looking to her left, Arianrhod saw her sister standing there, not 20 feet from her.

“I thought this was all because of you!’ spat Arianrhod.  ‘Let us gut go and we will just leave.  You won’t make any trouble for you.  You won’t hear from us again.”

“Oh, dear sister.  You don’t mean that.  You’ll see how important you are to our work here.  You’ll see,” smiled Marie.

“She’s your sister!?” asked Christina astonishingly.

“Yes,’ said Arianrhod.  ‘We are genetically related.”

“Listen, I have a proposition for you two.  Since we are at a state of the art facility that has just been completed I can make your stay here as comfortable as possible, for the both of you.  Without being in those nasty restraints.  You will be able to swim around to your hearts desires.  We are based on an island in which we own a sizable lagoon in which we have fenced off.  But you will have to allow us to study you and sometimes it may get a little invasive but nothing close to severely physically or permanently harming you.  What do you say?” asked Marie.

“What’s the catch?” asked Arianrhod.

“The catch is that it may take several more years before we can tap into the magical powers that had changed you sis.  Until we can tap into that we can’t have you leave the premises.  It will be too risky of an option for us to have someone or some other country to find you two and find a way to make military personal out of mermaids,’ said Marie matter of factly.  ‘If it makes it any easier I’ll let you two sit on it for a few minutes.”

With that Marie left the room swiftly.

“Something doesn’t seem right,’ said Arianrhod.  ‘Seems like she’s withholding something.”

“Do we have a choice?’ said Christina.  ‘I mean, I don’t know about you, but I don’t want to be strapped up to this hospital bed like some kind of criminal.  At least in the lagoon we can swim around and feel like we have some control.”

“Fair point,’ mused Arianrhod.  ‘Maybe we will be able to find some kink in the chains within the fencing and we could get loose from there.  I guess it will be better than just laying her chained up like animals.”

“Maybe,” said Christina half-heartily.

Both mermaids laid there and stared into space, lost in their own thoughts, before Marie came back into the room.

“Well, did you two make a decision?” asked Marie, matter of factly.

“Fine, we’ll do it,” sighed Arianrhod, not liking the situation one bit.

“Great, I’ll get everything prepared.  It’ll be a couple hours before we can move you.  Until then please take your time to think how much help you will be giving to us as whole.  The country will be safer because of you two,” smiled Marie.

A moment after Marie walked out of the room Arianrhod said, “I still don’t trust her.”

“We have to if we want to get out of these chains,” said Christina.

With a huff, Arianrhod nodded in an agreement.

Hours later, Arianrhod and Christina were being slowly lowered the lagoon by a fish net and crane from the Northern beach side of the lagoon.

“It will be nice to actually swim again,’ said Christina with a smile.  ‘There’s a certain feeling of serenity in it.”

All Arianrhod could do was nod in agreement as one side of the net was let go from the hook and the two mermaids fell several feet into the warm, clear tropical waters.

The two mermaids swam a few feet away from the netting that was still in the water before they resurfaced and took in their surroundings.

“Look,’ said Christina, pointing westward, out towards the open ocean.  ‘It looks like there is the fencing bobbers and the fencing continuing a few above the water.”

Arianrhod looked westward.  Seeing the fencing, she looked at how long the fencing was, starting from the northern end of the lagoon to the southern end.  It looked like the length of the fencing was somewhere around a half-mile long and was about were the border of the lagoon and the open ocean met.  “It looks like we have the entire lagoon to swim in.  There is a lot of room to explore.”

“Yes,” smiled Christina.

“Well, then lets get exploring,” said Arianrhod, just before she dove under the water and towards the deeper parts of the lagoon.  Looking behind her, she saw that Christina was close behind her.

Looking around as they both swam was amazing.  Not only did they swim in an expansive lagoon but they were surrounded by a diversity of sea life that you can only find in the tropics but there seemed to be some small underwater caves that they could explore.  They were intrigued for hours before the newness wore off.

Swimming to the surface, Arianrhod looked around, realizing that tit was evening and the sun was setting.  Christina surfaced a moment later, nearly ten feet away and looked around.

“I wonder if we have to fend for ourselves if we are to eat,” mussed Christina as she looked towards Arianrhod.

Looking towards shore, Arianrhod said, “I think so.  I mean why would there be an abundance of fish and other food within the fencing?”

“Good point,” responded Christina.   Taking a deep breath, Christina dove under the surface once again.

Looking around again, Christina thought to herself, “I’m going to have to find a kinky the fence somehow.  I need to get out of here and find my son and live my life as a free person, a free mermaid.  But for right now I need to eat and explore the lagoon.  A plan needs to be devised.”

With that, Arianrhod dipped under the water’s surface and followed Christina down to Ocean floor, nearly 30 feet below.
There will be definately an Epilogue for this but this is definately the end of the storyline.  What do you all think of the storyline?

This was an okay chapter. It felt like it was missing something. Just that finality to it. That last detail that would make readers think that Arianrhod truly had a final fate. But this chapter leaves things up to the epilogue to settle things. It definitely spun the story in a direction that was unexpected, but I think that there could have been just one more actual chapter that could have tied things together better. As was said earlier, this chapter spun things around quickly. And that's not necessarily a good thing. Perhaps the epilogue will wind things down. Anyway, good stuff! I'm a seasoned mermaid fiction critic, and I believe that this series was engaging. I would highly recommend future mermaid stories from fares002. And I look forward to the epilogue for this story.
