“This is amazing,’ said River.  ‘I can’t believe the power I feel from running across a small field.  The freedom, the extra energy is amazing.  It’s been less than 24 hours and I have to thank you Dr. Roberts.  I couldn’t even dream of having this type of life and power, even if for a short time.”

“That’s great to hear River.  You are the first subject who took so well to the transformation.  I’m glad you are able to feel so at ease in your new form,” said Dr. Roberts, who was sitting on the fence of the vast enclosure on his farm.  River trotted up to him, she still was taller than him, even with him sitting on the top piece of wood of the fence.

“I was never a country girl growing up.  But it did seem like, now, that I was somehow trapped in the big city and not being able to find the freedom of the country had to offer.  I don’t know how to thank you for this,” said River, with a smile.

“Just be as helpful to Robert as much as you can be around the farm.  He is a good friend of mine and will be checking up on you as much as he can.  He will also be observing you too.  I asked him for a full report about how you are coming along,’ said Dr. Roberts.  ‘A big part of this study is how you are coming along physically, mentally, and emotionally.  You are a big part of my studies.”

“I understand sir.  I’ll try my best in the time I am here.” Smiled River.

“You don’t have to call me ‘sir’ River.  Dr. Roberts is best,” said Dr. Roberts.

“Ok, Dr. Roberts.  I’ll keep that in mind,” said River as her tail swished.

“Hey-oh, how’s my favorite new centauress? I bet you are ready to get out there and run around with the other horses,” gibed Robert as he jogged up to the fence.

River blushed.

“Quit bugging the poor girl Robert.  She’s been here, what, eighteen hours and you are still joking around with her,’ said Dr. Roberts as he jumped down from the fence.  ‘She still hasn’t fully gotten her balance down and you expect her to act like she was born with four legs.  Anyway, I have to head out.  I have a long road ahead of me.  I have to stop off at my office at the University for a day and then head back to my own farm to check up on the other two.”

“Ok, I’ll walk you out to your truck,’ said Robert as he quickly caught up to Dr. Roberts.  ‘River, I’ll be right back.”

The two men walked silently for a few moments.  As they walked around the corner, and out of sight of River, and onto the front lawn Dr. Roberts said, “So you ready to take on another centauress on your farm?  I am sure she is will be helpful around this place.  Even make sure your daughter and the rest of the horses are well taken care of.”

“Yeah,’ responded Robert.  ‘I could use the extra help.  I’m not as young as I once was.  Middle Age is a bitch, huh?  Plus, you’ll be getting all the data that is needed about her status every few days via email.  I know how important your work is to you.”

“Yes, all this research can and will help humankind in the long run.  Even if it isn’t an ‘appropriate’ testing it on human’s just yet.  But this is the only way to collect the necessary information to complete my research,” said Dr. Roberts as the two of them walked up to his truck.  ‘Well, I’ll see you and River in just over a month to see how everything is progressing.”

“OK, see ya later buddy,” said Robert as he gave Dr. Roberts a handshake.

“See ya,” said Dr. Roberts as he got into his truck and started the engine.  Waving at Robert, Dr. Roberts drove off.

Turning around, Robert walked back to the field that River was in.  “She is stilling standing there, where we left her, patiently,” thought Robert, looking at the centauress in admiration.

“So since it is midafternoon and there is not much else to do today on the farm how about you and I go for a stroll so we can get to know each other a little better,” said Robert, stepping up onto the fence.

“Sure thing,” said River with a smile.

“Then come on.  I know a great trail we can take,’ responded Robert as he jumped over the fence and into the enclosed field.  ‘Follow me and we can talk.”

River trotted up to Robert’s side and slowed to a walk.  “What did you want to talk about?” she asked.

“Well for starters, what experience do you have with horses?” asked Robert.

“Direct aren’t you,’ giggled River.  ‘The answer I none.  My lower half of my body is the first time I have ever had anything to do with a horse let alone being in the presence of a horse.”

“Well that’s new,’ stated a shocked Robert.  ‘You’re one of those city slickers who don’t really get out of the city much huh?”

“Thanks for being blunt,’ said River, slightly insulted.  ‘You could have been a little bit nicer about it.”

“I can see we are getting off on the wrong foot.  For that I am sorry.  I will try to be a little less ‘blunt’ as you put it.  How about we start over,” asked Robert.

“let’s,” said River.

“Well, I’ll begin.  My name is Robert and I am owner of a horse breeding farm.  I am friends with Dr. Roberts, who have recently meet,” said Robert.

“I’m River.  My parents named me River because they gave birth to me next to a river on the way to the hospital.  They thought it was an appropriate name.  I have one older brother who is enrolled as a graduate student at the same University that I am attending.  Which happens to be the same University that Dr. Roberts is a professor at,” said River.

“Well, it is nice to meet you River,” said Robert.

“It is nice to meet you too,” said River.

A Few Hours Later
Dr. Roberts was driving onto campus, it was evening and the sun was very low in the sky.  He was a little upset because of traffic getting to the University made him late.  Or at least late on his schedule.  Driving around the circle roadway around campus Dr. Roberts knew it was going to take a few minutes to get to the back of the campus and to his office, which caused him to become a little more frustrated than he was already was.

Driving towards his office, Dr. Roberts was now about a minute away from his office noticed something   particular, a centaur running across the road nearly four hundred feet in front of him.  Dr. Roberts blinked.  It ran across the road so fast he hardly noticed it.

Confused, Dr. Roberts sped up and turned into the parking lot that he saw the centaur run into.  Parking in a spot that allowed for his truck and horse trailer to fit he turned off the engine and looked around.

Looking around from his left window through the front window through the passenger side window, Dr. Roberts didn’t see a thing beyond a couple of cars and the campus.  “Did I imagine seeing a centaur on campus,” thought Dr. Roberts.

Suddenly, Dr. Roberts heard clomping of horse shoes to his left, before he could look back out the driver’s side window he heard a knock on the window.  “Dr. Roberts I need your help,” a male voice said.

Quickly looking to his left, Dr. Roberts saw the face of a young adult male looking at him through the window.  Realizing it was Phillip Dr. Roberts rolled down the window and said, “Phillip!  What are you doing here?  You shouldn’t be in the open like this.  The world doesn’t yet know that I can transform people.  You and I both would be in big trouble if you are found by authorities.  It is only ‘crazy conspiracy theorists’ that adhere to the video’s already out there as ‘real’ and not some elaborate hoax and I would like to keep it that way until all my research proves that it is all good and well.”

“But Dr. Roberts I really need your help.  You said you wouldn’t be back to the farm for a while so I galloped here as fast as possible to see if you were here.  It’s Jessica, she’s in trouble. She thinks you are at the heart of some vast conspiracy.  This lady, other centauress, named Nancy was trying to convince us you were some type of mad scientist…,” said Phillip in between heavy breaths.

“Before you finish what you have to say.  I really need to get you out of sight before anyone sees you,’ interrupted Dr. Roberts as he got out of the car.  ‘Hurry, get into the trailer and once we get back to my farm you can finish what you have to say.”

“But…,” said Phillip.

“No ‘but’s’ now.  Please let’s get going.  We can discuss it later,’ said Dr. Roberts as he began to open the trailer’s door.  ‘Please trust me right now.  We don’t need a scene.  You’ll become a science experiment at some hidden military base at best if we don’t go now.”

“Ok,” said Phillip, a little disappointed he couldn’t finish what he wanted to say but understood why Dr. Roberts was trying to avoid a scene.  Phillip trotted to the back of the trailer, up the ramp, and into the trailer.

A moment later, after everything was secure, Dr. Roberts closed the trailer door.  “I’m sorry Phillip.  I don’t mean to be rude.  I’ll listen the moment we are at my farm,” said Dr. Roberts said through the window of the trailer to Phillip as he walked by and into the truck.  Starting the engine, Dr. Roberts drove off, remembering very well Nancy and her need for revenge on him.

“I’m going to have to explain to him why Nancy is trying to get back at me,” thought Dr. Roberts as he turned out of the parking lot and towards his farm.
